Review of the SCI Annual Alumni Breakfast

November 6, 2011

The annual alumni breakfast, which was held on Sunday November 6th, was an overwhelming success. Over 100 alumni returned to the Inn to share in food, fellowship, music and a special appearance by the SCI choir to end the day. Two SCI alumni shared their stories of recovery, along with one current resident. The SCI Alumni Association honored St. Christopher's Inn President & CEO, Fr. Bill Drobach, SA, who was presented with a plaque recognizing him as man of the year for his work with the SCI alumni over the years. The SCI testimonial DVD was shared at the breakfast on the new 60" TV, which was recently donated to the Inn by the Alumni Association.

Many men from the alumni association also helped to serve the Thanksgiving meals for the current residents, and have volunteered to work on Christmas Day. St. Christopher's Inn is very fortunate to have an active Alumni Association with men who enjoy giving back to the Friars in thanksgiving for all that was freely given to them.

SCI 2011 Halloween Show and Party

October 28, 2011

Each year, the staff of St. Christopher's Inn produce a Halloween Show for the residents.  This is a highlight of the year for the staff, as we enjoy showing the men how to have a great time without drugs or alcohol.  The men enjoy it too--particularly watching the staff make fools of themselves to entertain them!  Check out the photos in the Gallery and watch some of the skits from the show on the SCI Youtube Channel--http://www.youtube.com/my_videos?feature=mhee.  You won't be sorry!

Christmas Festivities at St. Christopher's Inn

December 19, 2011

On Monday, December 12th at 7:00 PM, a longstanding tradition of holiday entertainment at St. Christopher's Inn continued with the annaul Christmas Play.  This tradition started many years ago when the Friars put on a show to entertain the Brothers Christopher for Christmas.  After several years, the men decided they wanted to entertain the Friars, and the original Christmas Play began.  This year, the play was written by Michael Boccia, a Social Worker at St. Christopher's Inn, and entitled "Remember Who You Are . . . A Christmas Story."  It was performed before a packed house at Pilgrim Hall, including current SCI Residents, Friars and Staff.  By all accounts, the play was a big hit, and the crowd rewarded the performers with thunderous applause.  The evening concluded with a performance by the SCI Mens Choir, who were joined on the final number by all Alumni Choir Members!  Check out the photos on our Facebook Page.

The Holiday Festivities continued a week later when Santa visited St. Christopher's Inn for the annual Men's Christmas Party.  The men all enjoyed cookies, coffee and fellowship, followed by a visit from Santa who had a gift for everyone!  Each resident recieved two collared shirts, a hand-knitted scarf and an envelope with $5 enclosed.  Thanks to everyone who donated shirts; thanks to all members of the Prayerful Mantle of Holy Child Church who knitted the scarves; and to the Friars of the Atonement and SCI Staff who contributed the monetary gifts.  The men were moved by the generosity of others, and very grateful for their gifts.  One very happy resident expressed his gratitude, "I can't even remember the last time I smiled before tonight."  Merry Christmas to all!

Putnam County Recovery Walk

September 25, 2011

In celebration of Recovery Month, the Putnam County Walk for Recovery took place on Sunday, September 25th.  Following is a review of the event, by David Gonzalez, Project Renewal Case Manager.

It started off a cloudy Sunday morning. By the time we began the festivities the sky cleared and the sun was brightly shinning. There were about 100 people there ready to walk for recovery. The event began with a young man giving a testimonial about his journey in recovery. He recited a beautiful poem he had written during his first few days in treatment. He went on to tell more about his journey and proceeded to sing several songs that he had written about the tremendous gift of recovery and those who played a role in his sobriety. Afterwards, we began to walk with a beautiful send-off by a single bagpiper.  It was a lovely sound as we walked off down the road to bring the message of awareness and recovery to the community. The walk was about a mile and a half and took about an hour. In the middle of the walk there was a moment of silence to remember those who have been lost to their addiction and for those who are still struggling or working their sobriety. Eleven men from St. Christopher's Inn participated in the Walk for Recovery.  These men were clearly moved by the event, and appreciated being part of such a worthy celebration.  After the walk was complete, there were several individuals who spoke in support of recovery, including Putnam County Judge, James Reitz. He told a story of how working with men and women in recovery and their families as a judge changed his life, and his idea of recovery. All in all it was the perfect day for a walk of awareness. The best way to can summarize the entire theme of the walk is with a verse from a Rogers and Hammerstein song, “Walk on through the wind, Walk on through the rain, though your dreams be tossed and blown, walk on walk on, walk on with hope in your heart and you’ll never walk alone, you’ll never walk alone.”

Annual St. Christopher’s Inn Alumni Picnic

August 6, 2011

More than 200 alumni showed up, with their families, for a day of fun, food and festivities on August 6th for the St. Christopher's Inn Annual Alumni Picnic!  Each member of the St. Christopher's Inn staff consider this day to be very special--a gratifying opportunity to celebrate years of hard work by and with the many men who darkened the door of St. Christopher's Inn broken, but left full of hope and promise.  To see some of the comments by St. Christopher's Inn Alumni, check out our Testimonials.
