A Glimpse Into Recovery: Exploring Art, Movement, and Healing at the Inn
St. Christopher’s Inn Counseling Department in collaboration with its Mission Support Department welcomed a small group of friends and benefactors for a unique opportunity to experience firsthand some of the therapeutic approaches that support recovery at the Inn.
The event began with an introduction to the MELT Method, led by Dr. Sarah Ruback, Ed.D., Chief Operating Officer of St. Christopher’s Inn. A gentle movement and restorative technique, the MELT Method promotes relaxation, awareness, and a sense of “at-one-ment.” Our guests explored several elements of the practice, which Dr. Ruback regularly incorporates into the integrated recovery program offered to our Brothers Christopher. The experience also helped prepare participants for the reflective art activity that followed.
Joy Pellegrino, MS, MA, Art Therapist and Spiritual Director at the Inn, then introduced everyone to the symbolism and therapeutic value of mandalas, which represent balance, wholeness, and harmony. Guided by Pellegrino, guests created their own mandala designs, using art as a tool for reflection, creativity, and personal expression.
The afternoon concluded with a group processing activity, inviting participants to share their thoughts and reflections on the experience. Through conversation, creativity, and connection, guests gained a deeper understanding of the healing-centered work taking place every day at St. Christopher’s Inn.
The event highlighted both the importance of individual expression and the strength of community in the recovery journey. Members of the Counseling Team were also present throughout the gathering, participating alongside guests and answering questions about the Inn’s comprehensive and integrated approach to recovery.
Thank you to Joy Pelligrino and Audrey Warn for making this event possible!
