Assemblymember Dana Levenberg Visits St. Christopher’s Inn
St. Christopher’s Inn recently welcomed Assemblymember Dana Levenberg and her Staff to Graymoor, home of the Franciscan Friars and Sisters of the Atonement, for an opportunity to learn about the Inn’s comprehensive and faith-based approach to treating substance use disorder and supporting lasting recovery. They toured the San Damiano Farm & Sober House and Mother Lurana House – where we hope to establish a Family Program in the near future. They had a quick tour of the entire mountain as well and were so impressed by the ministries we have for people of all faiths in the Hudson Valley and beyond.
The visit began with a conversation led by Fr. Dennis Polanco, SA, President and Spiritual Advisor of the Inn and Dr. Sarah Ruback, Ed.D., Chief Operating Officer. Together, they shared the rich history of St. Christopher’s Inn and discussed the models of care used by our counselors which recognizes that recovery is more than overcoming substance use, it’s about helping each man heal physically, emotionally, socially and spiritually while developing the skills, confidence and support needed to build a healthy future. Assemblymember Levenberg learned how individual and group counseling, medical care, vocational services, creative therapies, spiritual support and a strong recovery community work together to help men create a foundation for long-term recovery.
Assemblymember Levenberg toured the Inn, meeting members of the counseling, medical, admissions, billing, facilities, and administrative teams. Along the way, she spoke with staff about their work and saw firsthand how every department contributes to creating a safe, respectful and therapeutic environment where men are encouraged, challenged and supported throughout their recovery.
Visits like these provide valuable opportunities for elected officials to better understand the realities of substance use disorder and the importance of comprehensive residential treatment. They also highlight the collaboration required among clinicians, medical professionals, support staff and community partners to help individuals navigate recovery and sustain meaningful change.
St. Christopher’s Inn is grateful to Assemblymember Levenberg for taking the time to visit Graymoor, meet with staff, and learn more about the organization’s mission. Her commitment to learning about the needs of individuals and families affected by substance use disorder reflects a shared belief that everyone deserves access to compassionate, evidence-based care and the opportunity to build a healthier future.
