San Damiano Farm Donates Hundreds of Pounds of Fresh Produce to Fred’s Pantry in Peekskill, NY

In recent weeks, Bob Conboy, Manager of San Damiano Farm, has been loading up his truck with hundreds of pounds of potatoes, garlic, and herbs and heading to Peekskill. His destination: Fred’s Pantry, a community food pantry at St. Peter’s Episcopal Church run by Caring for the Hungry and Homeless of Peekskill (CHHOP).

“At St. Christopher’s Inn and across Graymoor, we believe that when we have more than we need, we share with our neighbors,” said Bob Conboy. “Being able to grow food and then share the harvest with our community is what San Damiano Farm, St. Christopher’s Inn and Graymoor are all about.”

“It’s a simple gesture that says a lot about the Franciscan spirit of St. Christopher’s Inn and the Friars. An abundant harvest creates an opportunity to reach beyond the farm and share what has been grown with neighbors in the surrounding community”, added Fr. Dennis Polanco, SA President & Spiritual Advisor at SCI.

Throughout the season, local residents and visitors from surrounding towns have made the trip to San Damiano Farm’s Friday market. Some come from just a few minutes away, while others travel many miles, knowing that the flowers, vegetables and herbs they bring home were grown and cared for right by our Brothers Christopher.

The farm’s harvest has also found its way onto local restaurant menus through partnerships with Farm to Table, The Garrison and Riverview. It’s a partnership San Damiano Farm is especially proud of.

The final weekly market of 2026 is scheduled for Friday, September 18.

As one growing season ends, preparations for the next one begin. Raised beds will be turned over, plans will take shape for the 2027 harvest, and throughout the fall, winter and early spring, Brothers Christopher will continue spending time at the farm. Before long, tiny seedlings will be started and carefully tended until they’re ready to become next season’s vegetables, herbs and plants.

And there’s still one more farm tradition to enjoy before the year ends. In December, the annual wreath and Christmas plant sale returns to the Nothing Be Lost Thrift Shop on the grounds of Graymoor.

I was pleasantly surprised by the existence of the Coffee House. Music is a central and meditative part of my life. The ability to perform for my new brothers here and the staff was unexpected and made this an incredible journey.

Today, I am a sober man. I live an honest and simple life. I’m a reliable, employable productive member of society. I have dignity and self-worth and even self-love. All of these things are a direct result of the care and guidance given to me by the Friars and the staff at St. Christopher’s Inn. Some people call it a homeless shelter. I call it home.
